Does item category detemrination in Oppportunity WebUI has relationship

The entry for Item category group in Product maintenance UI come from table below:

Test: I assign hierarchy R3PRODSTYP to 02:

And I use a product category ARETROFIT2 of 02 to create product:

Maintain item category group for this product:

In WebUI, item category can still successfully be determined. It seems no dependency on product category exists.
